Economic Empowerment and Transformation
UTi Sun Couriers – Committed to Economic Empowerment
UTi South Africa is a verified Level 4 contributor to BBBEE in terms of the recently
published Codes of Good Practice. This directly benefits our clients as, by procuring
from a BBBEE company, you can claim your invoiced spend with UTi as a monetary value
towards your own financial target in the BBBEE scorecard in the Procurement pillar.
The notional financial value you would normally claim from a Level 4 company is
one rand for every one rand spent (i.e. 100%)
However, because UTi is also classed as a VAE (Value Adding Enterprise), the BBBEE
rules allow our clients to inflate the value of our invoice to them by multiplying
the invoiced amount by 1.25. This will gives you, the client, an inflated monetary
value to claim towards your financial targets in the Procurement pillar.
UTi Sun Couriers - Committed to Transformation
All entities within the UTi Group in South Africa believe in the principles of Broad-Based
Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE). Empowerment and capacity building are key elements
of UTi Sun Couriers' transformation strategy.
- In 1991, Sun Couriers created the owner-driver scheme, transforming
employees into entrepreneurs. The scheme has been exceptionally successful and has
resulted in increased productivity and enhanced service levels for our customers.
- We realise that transformation is vital at every level of
the organisation and so place great emphasis on measures to promote the equitable
representation of people from the Designated Group as defined by both the Employment
Equity and Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment legislation. Particular attention
is paid to correcting the racial and gender imbalances at the top three levels of
management, with a focus on the advancement of Black females.
- Furthermore, as the up-liftment of the UTi family is fundamental,
UTi embarked on an empowerment transaction which has seen the formation of the UTi
Empowerment Trust (an educational trust) holding a 25 percent stake in UTi South
Africa. The benefits are used solely for the education of Black employees and their
dependants. The trust has been structured to ensure delivery of the best empowerment
through education across the beneficiaries nationally. The bursary is professionally
administered by The South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR.) The UTi Empowerment
Trust is represented on the Board of UTi South Africa by one of its three trustees.
The trust has an employee representative trustee, formally elected by the employees
via the members of the Employment Equity Aids and Training Committee (EEATSCom.)
